City Guide: New York
Armory week is here and it's back to school for the art world. Our New York-based team has rounded up the art fairs we're visiting (and one we're exhibiting at) along with our go-to spots for fueling, refueling, and everything in-between.
Fair: Independent 20th Century at the Battery Maritime Building
Neighborhood: Financial District
While You're There: Before the fair, stroll around Battery Park City's public art projects and pick up a coffee at Conwell Coffee Hall, a former bank set in a classic Art Deco building. After you've explored the fair, treat yourself to a Guinness at The Dead Rabbit and then head to Dim Sum Palace (great for groups) or New York's oldest steakhouse, Delmonico's.
Fair: Duet at WSA
Neighborhood: South Street Seaport
While You're There: Stroll the greenway for sweeping views of the East River and Brooklyn Bridge, then head up to the rooftop at Pier 17 for a bird’s-eye view. Learn about New York's maritime history at the South Street Seaport Museum (yes, you can ride the boats). Hit Fish Market for dive bar happy hour and Malaysian bites.
Fair: Art on Paper at Pier 36 (come find us at Booth G03!)
Neighborhood: Lower East Side / Two Bridges
While You're There: Pop into Beverly 1975 and Coming Soon for some window shopping. Have a post-fair drink at Bar Belly, followed by breakfast-for-dinner at Golden Diner or Kopitiam.
Fair: La Feria: Print Media Fair at 20 Cooper Square
Neighborhood: NoHo
While You're There: Browse the shelves of Dashwood for rare and out-of-print photo books. Sip a cocktail at Holiday Cocktail Lounge and pretend you're in Past Lives or kick up some sawdust at McSorley's. Delight in a dosa from the legendary dosa man, Kandaswamy Thirukumar, in Washington Square Park, or snag a table at Fish Cheeks for Thai seafood.
Thing to do: The Armory Show at the Javits Center
Neighborhood: Hudson Yards
While You're There: Start your morning with coffee and pastries at Urbana Cafe, checking out a few Chelsea galleries as you head north to the Javits Center. Debrief over dinner at the Frying Pan and enjoy views of the water.
Thing to do: NY Art Book Fair at MoMA PS-1
Neighborhood: Long Island City
While You're There: Take the ferry to the Long Island City stop. Check out the latest exhibition at Culture Lab LIC. Go antiquing at Remix Market NYC. Treat yourself to a boba and rice roll at I’Milky 沐白 - Long Island City or a drink at 56709, a Cantopop bar hidden behind Gulp.
