Dan Covert is interested in eliciting responses from the juxtaposition of order and abstraction. He composes shapes to appear structured yet spontaneous, and his painting practice is a paradoxical exercise of using analogue means to pursue a perfection that, in reality, can only be obtained with digital or mechanical processes. There’s a beauty in the fact that no matter how hard he tries to hide his hand and its gestures, it will always be visible to the naked eye. Dan has developed a graphic language of organic and decisive forms that he methodically and gradually evolves over time.
Dan Covert (b. 1981) is a Brooklyn, New York-based artist interested in pushing the emotional and formal limits of abstraction. Dan utilizes a graphic language of organic and decisive forms, and his work explores structuring and ordering these abstract shapes so they appear composed, yet spontaneous. His process leverages digital techniques to sketch and iterate forms, which he ultimately renders with meticulous detail using analog means.
