The body as architecture and architecture as body is something I think about a lot when I’m working. Sometimes the paintings have roots, limbs, or even a flowering head, but they always have a stability coming from a central line or a spine.

About the Artist

Roberta-Gentry-Headshot

Roberta Gentry (b. 1984) is a Los Angeles–based artist whose layered acrylic paintings draw from the natural world and the tension between order and chaos. Beginning with a grid that structures horizontal and vertical movement, her compositions grow like woven architectures, suspending within them both botanical and bodily references. Roberta's paintings explore the porous boundary between the natural and the artificial, and evoke a sense of time where beginnings and endings remain simultaneously visible through her translucent layers of color.
