“I have continued to blend references to antiquity and Mesoamerican cultural artifacts in this newest series, titled Bacchanalia. For these works, I have chosen to celebrate abundance, fertility, summertime warmth and have explored exposing raw materials like canvas or woven paper and mixing mediums as well as reference points. I crave objects that are undressed, comfortable in their own skin. I want to see people dancing and loving. I want to express the nostalgic solitude of slow summer days.” — RF Alvarez
Austin, Texas-based artist RF Alvarez (b. 1988) explores the act of artifact-making through painting. Using disparate historical references, he draws from symbolic motifs and mythical iconography to address issues of identity and culture. Using color as a gateway to evoke an emotional resonance, RF’s carefully selected palette creates an atmospheric environment for his figurative narratives.
