“In this painting, 'Shorthand for Magical Thinking', I am referencing the idea of "ignorance is bliss". Sometimes not knowing the truth is so wonderful and makes for easier decision making. The candy-colored shapes and playful graphite dots are supposed to all be lighthearted and playful, the opposite of heavy knowledge or the reality check of hard facts. My 'Shorthand' series is about transmitting information and communicating in a way that isn't readily understood. I'm exploring the feeling of a quick download of information into your mind that comes from somewhere unknown, where you then have to connect the pieces, process and sort it all out. It is about trying to figure out what an ambiguous message might be about and trusting your instinct to understand a situation before you can put into words what is happening. I think of each of the symbols as a key to cracking the code - they each have significant meaning to the overall whole.” — Lydia Bassis

About the Artist

File 83527

Lydia Bassis (b. 1977) is an abstract artist living and working in Seattle, WA. Originally trained as a printmaker, her narrative paintings employ an invented language of personal symbols that drift, collide and eclipse each other as they navigate within contemplative compositions. Working intuitively, Lydia’s paintings and drawings explore the unseen phenomenon of our world, capturing energy and experiences that can’t be put into words.
