“With an emphasis on the hand-made, Pfeffer collects architecture, and then reconstructs it by hand, physically cutting and re-arranging organic elements from her photographs to emblematically recreate the structures.” — Karra Rees
Originally from Brisbane, Australia, Liesl Pfeffer (b.1979) is an artist living and working in Berlin, Germany. Whether working in photography or textiles, Liesl is interested in the act of dissecting and reconstructing in order to achieve new meaning. In her photographs, Liesl constructs images of the natural and built environment using analog darkroom techniques, still-life photography and collage. Liesl’s textile works are composed of machine pieced and hand-quilted cotton sewn into both large and small tapestries. Inspired by marine signal flags used to communicate at great distances while at sea, Liesl’s textile works are an investigation in language and personal symbology.
