“A fashion and fine art photographer, Engman uses his mother as his muse in an arresting series. In one picture she shows her bared breasts on a snowy night. In another she sits on the floor half-naked and draped in a grey and red kimono, holding a pigeon in front of her face.” — The Forbes 30 Under 30 List
Originally from Chicago, Charlie Engman (b. 1987) began working with photography while completing a degree in Japanese and Korean Studies at the University of Oxford. While involved professionally in theatre and dance, he took an interest in visual and sculptural movement and gesture and began using photography primarily as a documenting device. The photographer often creates conceptual images that confront the artifice of his working environments, and deliberately includes elements like paper backdrops, mirrored surfaces and foam blocks, which construct the temporal spaces in which his shoot takes place. Upon graduating from Oxford, Engman returned to the U.S. and began integrating his commercial, fashion, and art practices. His work has been exhibited in numerous venues and appears in the commercial and editorial pages of publications around the world.
