“I don't know if these are my own private thoughts or if they are pulled from a collective feeling of wariness and unease. I think we are all at the mercy of this inner voice, continuously cycling through fleeting musings of uncertainty and indecision. The voice fluctuates between ignorance, action, anxiety, doubt, and ambivalence; it speaks with a level of suspicious skepticism we keep behind closed lips. This series of works presents the often contradictory nature of the inner voice. A marbled black and white surface obfuscate the text, adding to the murky, swirling feeling of this ceaseless, one-sided dialogue.” — Ben Skinner
Ben Skinner (b.1977) is a Canadian artist who explores the nature of language through the use of text and materiality. His works often combine mechanical production methods common in sign making with traditional materials and techniques, such as hand-applied gold leaf and silk marbling. The phrases within the works seamlessly weave together humor and pain to explore the incongruities of daily life. He graduated with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Art from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax in 2000, and with an MFA in Art & Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003.
