“Shield Shield, Shield Warp and Shield Zig Zag were all made concomitantly, and in conversation with each other. In each, the 'ground' of the painting, meaning the painting’s actual surface, features prominently. While this not only makes for a stronger figure/ground relationship, it also emphasizes the sensation of the paint itself and the patterns as enacting a kind of veiling. The works are looser, playful and fresh; they are meant to have a kind of visual immediacy particular to 'one-shot' paintings.” — Aschely Vaughan Cone
