“I went to the desert. The colors and shapes were unusual, almost unreal. I brought a lot of ideas back to the studio.” — Aliza Cohen
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, artist Aliza Cohen (b. 1980) is a relentless observer, who is constantly captivated by contrast, whether visual, philosophical, or conceptual. She began her practice by painting suburban landscapes observed from her studio, but eventually progressed into creating more abstract compositions. Place and the specificity of certain locales are significant to Cohen, who uses repetitive symbols to tell stories within her works - a kind of “painting language.” She holds an MFA in Painting from Boston University and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She has been the recipient of several awards, including the Jentel Foundation Residency in Wyoming, the Kala Art Institute Printmaking Residency, and an Artist Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center.
