This selection of works on paper were created during my June 2021 visit to Guanajuato, México—the state that my maternal grandfather was from before he immigrated to the US at the age of 4. He never returned as part of his pledge to his US patriotism and this was, sadly, one of his lasting regrets. During my visit, I was particularly drawn to the characteristics of the geographical region that exists as the intersection of the arid north as it mingles with the lusher south, all while being hugged by mountains like the Chichíndaro, Sirena and Las Gachas. The hilly city was dark green from the recent influx of rain and that mixed with the candy colored buildings & homesteads served as inspiration for my color palette. I am hoping these are the first of many works created in Guanajuato and that they will exist as part of my personal cultural exploration of my family’s history.

Xochi Solis

About the Artist

Xochi creates her work through the repeated act of layering paint, hand-dyed paper, vinyl, found images, and other materials; each piece is a meditation on color, texture, and shape all leading to a greater awareness of the visual intricacies found in her immediate environment, both natural and cultural.
