Jessica Simorte (b. 1988) is a Texas-based painter whose work serves as an ongoing examination of how artmaking can function as a mode of placemaking. These works are meditations on the infinite power of physical and invented space. Simorte utilizes shape and color to create energetic pieces that interpret specific interiors and the psychological need to belong somewhere. Her preference to work on a smaller scale allows the viewer to observe subtle textural and tonal shifts within the composition. She currently lives outside Houston and is a professor within Sam Houston State University’s W.A.S.H. program. She holds an MFA with an emphasis in painting from the University of Cincinnati.
