This painting is inspired by the film 'Repulsion'. This series of works is titled 'A Delicate Balance'. These are some of the last paintings I made from that series. The work as a whole encompasses painting, sound, performance and video. The premise of 'A Delicate Balance' engages with films focusing on the lives of women that were made between the 1940s and 1970s. These films upheld negative sterotypes that we still live with in our culture today. I believe that women were not always crazy or mentally ill as they are depicted in these films, but were instead pushed to the brink of sanity because of the male dominated, sexist culture. Women were scapegoats and untrusted, simply because women were not men. They were treated unfairly, unjustly and brutally in this "golden era" of classic film.

Dana Bell's works examine the specific ways we communicate through body language, all the while weaving enigmatic narratives around the characters in her scenes.
